Why Aerate Your Lawn?

Oklahoma soil works hard. Red clay packs down, sandy soil drains too fast, and a few summers of heat, foot traffic and mowing leave the ground so compacted that water, air and nutrients can't reach the roots. Aeration opens that soil back up so every watering and every lawn application goes further.

A strong, deep root system is what helps your grass handle our Oklahoma stressors: extreme heat, drought, flooding rains and insect pressure. That's why we call aeration the secret weapon of a great-looking lawn.

Signs Your Lawn Needs Aeration

    • Water runs off or puddles instead of soaking in

    • Grass is thin, even with regular watering and treatments

    • Bermuda in sunny areas isn't spreading to fill bare or sparse spots

    • A spongy layer of thatch has built up above the soil

    • The soil is hard, compacted clay, or loose and sandy

    • Kids, pets or vehicles regularly travel the same paths

Two Ways to Aerate

Core aeration is the traditional, deep treatment. Our core aerator pulls thousands of small plugs of soil from your lawn, opening channels so sunlight, water, nutrients and your lawn applications can reach the root zone. The plugs are left on the lawn, where they break down and return nutrients to the soil within a couple of weeks.

Liquid aeration is a less invasive option. A specialized soil-conditioning treatment helps loosen soil structure and improve water penetration without pulling plugs, so there's no mess on the lawn.

When to Aerate

We aerate in the spring and in the fall, when cooler temperatures let roots recover and grow into the newly opened soil. We recommend aerating at least once a year, and a second aeration after a brutal Oklahoma summer won't hurt.

Planning to add fescue to shady spots? Fall aeration pairs perfectly with our Fescue Overseeding service, since the open soil gives new seed great seed-to-soil contact. (Aeration alone does not include seed.)

Lawn Aeration FAQs

Will aeration make a mess?

Core aeration leaves small soil plugs on the lawn. They look a little odd for a few days, then break down with watering and mowing. Liquid aeration leaves no plugs at all.

Do I need to do anything before you come?

Water the lawn a day or two before so the soil is moist, and mark sprinkler heads, invisible dog fences and any shallow lines so we can work around them.

What should I do after an aeration?

Keep watering and mowing as usual. Leave the plugs where they are; they are free organic matter for your soil.

How often should I aerate?

At least once a year for most Oklahoma lawns. Compacted, high-traffic or sandy lawns benefit from both a spring and a fall aeration.

How much does aeration cost?

Pricing is based on the size of your lawn. Request a free estimate and we'll send your price the same business day.
