Del City got its start in 1946, when Capitol Hill home builder George Epperly bought 160 acres east of Oklahoma City and named the new town after his daughter, Delaphene. The first houses were ready in 1947, and residents voted to incorporate in 1948.

Today Del City covers about seven and a half square miles between southeast Oklahoma City, Midwest City and Tinker Air Force Base, right where I-35 meets I-40. Many homes sit on compact, established lots, and those older lawns have their own set of needs. Our crews make the short trip from Moore to take care of them.

What Older Lawns Need

A lawn that has been around for decades usually comes with a few built-in challenges:

  • A deep weed seed bank. Years of weeds going to seed leave thousands of seeds waiting in the soil. Consistent pre-emergent treatments, year after year, keep them from sprouting.

  • Patchy Bermuda. Thin spots invite weeds. Regular feeding helps Bermuda spread and fill those gaps on its own.

  • Hard, tired soil. Decades of foot traffic pack the ground down. Core aeration lets water and nutrients reach the roots again.

Your Water Comes From Lake Thunderbird

Del City shares Lake Thunderbird with Midwest City and Norman. The lake was built in the early 1960s to supply water to all three cities, and in dry summers its level drops and residents may be asked to cut back. Check the City of Del City's announcements for current watering rules.

A thick, weed-free lawn makes the most of every drop. Weeds compete with your grass for water, so clearing them out means more moisture for the turf you actually want. Water early in the morning, and water deeply but less often to encourage deeper roots.

Season by Season in Del City

  • Late winter: pre-emergent goes down before spring weeds can germinate.

  • Spring: broadleaf control and fertilizer as the Bermuda wakes up.

  • Summer: spot treatments for crabgrass, nutsedge and other summer weeds.

  • Fall: another pre-emergent to stop henbit and other cool-season weeds before winter.

Fertilizer is built into the program. See how we fertilize.
