What Are Grub Worms?
Grub worms are thick, C-shaped white larvae with small tan or yellow heads. They are the young of June beetles and other scarab beetles, and they live just below the surface, feeding on grass roots.
Nearly every lawn has a few grubs, and a handful won't hurt anything. The trouble starts when the population gets large. Grubs chew through the roots until the grass can no longer pull up water and nutrients, and whole sections of lawn turn brown and die. The hard part is that you usually can't see a grub problem until the damage is already done.
Signs of Grub Damage
Brown or dead patches that don't green up after watering
Grass that peels back like a loose carpet because the roots are gone
Areas that feel soft or spongy when you walk on them
Skunks, armadillos or birds digging and tearing up the lawn looking for grubs
Damage that shows up in late summer and into fall, even after a great spring
How Our Preventative Grub Treatment Works
Because there's no way to predict which lawns will get a heavy grub population in a given year, the most reliable approach is prevention. Our grub preventative is applied once a year in early summer, usually alongside your Round 3 lawn application. That timing targets the young grubs as they hatch, before they're big enough to do serious root damage.
Think of it as inexpensive insurance for your lawn. Repairing a lawn after grubs have eaten the roots means reseeding or resodding and months of recovery; preventing the problem costs a fraction of that.
Fewer Diggers, Too
Animals like skunks and armadillos dig through lawns hunting for grubs. When there are fewer grubs to find, your lawn becomes far less attractive to them, and there's less digging to repair.
Grub prevention is especially valuable for fescue and shade-grass areas and for lawns that have had grub damage before.
Grub Prevention FAQs
When is the treatment applied?
Once a year in early summer, typically with your Round 3 application. If you're adding it later in the season, call us and we'll let you know whether the preventative window is still open.
Will I still see grubs after treatment?
Possibly a few. Every lawn has some grubs; the goal is to keep the population low enough that they can't damage your grass.
I already have dead patches. Is it too late?
Give us a call. We'll take a look, confirm whether grubs are the cause, and talk through options for treatment and repair.
Do I need to do it every year?
Yes. The treatment protects the lawn for that season, so we recommend it annually.
How much does it cost?
Pricing is based on your lawn size. Request a free estimate and we'll get you a price the same business day.
