Fescue Overseeding
Fall Fescue Overseeding for Shady Lawns
Bermuda loves the sun. For the shady spots under trees and beside the house, fescue is the answer.
Why Fescue for Shady Areas?
Bermuda grass is the most popular grass in Oklahoma for sunny areas, but it doesn't grow well in the shade. That's why so many lawns end up with thin or bare patches under trees and along the shady side of the house.
Fescue is a cool-season grass that tolerates shade much better. It stays green through the winter, and its wide blades give shady areas a lush, full look.
Why Fescue Needs Overseeding Every Fall
Fescue doesn't spread the way Bermuda does, and when it dies it doesn't come back the next season. It's normal for some fescue to thin out every summer in our intense Oklahoma heat. That's why we recommend a touch-up overseeding every fall to keep fescue areas thick, healthy and less weedy.
Two Overseeding Options
Touch-Up Overseeding is for lawns that already have fescue. We add fresh seed to fill in areas that thinned out over the summer.
Full Overseeding is for shady areas that are mostly bare. We aerate, overseed, and apply starter fertilizer and organics to give new seed the best possible start.
We only overseed fescue in the fall, when cooler temperatures give cool-season grass the time it needs to establish before next summer.
Watering Is the Key to Success
New fescue seed cannot dry out. After overseeding, water the seeded areas for about 10 to 15 minutes every morning and every evening for roughly two to three weeks, until the new fescue is a couple of inches tall. After that, you can move to deeper, less frequent watering.
Our weed control program treats fescue, Bermuda and mixed lawns. When the owners of Irish Green started in 2001, they worked closely with Oklahoma State University for years to perfect a formula specifically for central Oklahoma lawns.
Fescue Overseeding FAQs
When do you overseed?
Fall only. Spring-seeded fescue rarely has time to establish before summer heat.
Does aeration include seed?
No. Aeration alone doesn't include seed. Full Overseeding includes aeration, seed and starter fertilizer.
Will fescue grow in full sun?
Fescue can struggle in full Oklahoma sun during summer. For sunny areas, a healthy Bermuda lawn is usually the better choice.
Can I keep my existing fescue going without overseeding?
Some fescue thins every summer, so without a yearly touch-up, shady areas tend to get thinner and weedier over time.
How is overseeding priced?
Overseeding is priced by the square footage of the area being seeded. Request a free estimate and we'll measure and quote your shady areas.
